Interpreter Training Information Session
Join Terril Chessell, Coordinator of Language Interpreter Services and trainer, Seok Koon Chin for an informative session on
the Community Interpreter Core Training Program (CICTP)
Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 6:00 pm
Via Zoom
What is the Community Interpreter Core Training Program (CICTP)?
The CICTP is a training program designed for individuals wishing to enter the community interpreting field as professional interpreters. CICTP is recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
Who should attend?
Anyone who is interested in becoming a Community Interpreter and is fully proficient (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in English and at least one other language.
Do I need to take the training to become a professional interpreter?
Yes. Successfully completing the CICTP is the first step in being recognized as a professional interpreter in Ontario. TBMA is part of the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration’s Language Interpreter Services Program, and as such is mandated by the province to ensure all our interpreters have completed the CICTP and are ILSAT certified.
Why should I attend this information session?
This is a good opportunity to learn more about the interpreter industry in Ontario, what it’s like to be an interpreter, and for you to find out if you have what it takes to become a professional interpreter.
Discussion Topics
· What is the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association?
· What is necessary to work in the interpretation industry?
· What type of jobs do interpreters typically get? What type of settings do interpreters work in?
· How much work can interpreters in Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario expect to get?
· What are the average wages for interpreters?
· What’s the difference between interpretation and translation?
How do I join?
Please register in advance by contacting Terril Chessell directly at terrilc@thunderbay.org or by phone at 807-345-4656. Once you are registered, Terril will send you the Zoom link.
