Who Am I? By Lalhu Thang My name is Lalhu Thang and so far I have lived in Thunder Bay for 3 years. I really like it. We arrived in Thunder Bay on October 21, 2005. My first memories in Thunder Bay are about the weather. It was pretty cold and very hard to adapt to the weather for us because the country where we came from was fairly warm all the time, and did not snow at all. It was hard to breathe in the wind. A week after we arrived in Thunder Bay, we were hesitant about going to school because I never spoke English before and I knew that my English that I had learned in India would not be enough here, but I had set a goal for myself. Before we moved to Canada we lived in Mizoram (India), which is a state located in Eastern India. It is not a big state and is very hard to find on a map. After 13 years in Mizoram we moved to Delhi (India) with my mother. My goals in life were too numerous because as I grew older I kept changing my goals or adding more. In particular I’d always wanted to be someone who could support my parents, and I still do. When I was around thirteen I wanted to be a soccer player or become soldier. I did not really think about anything else. I think it was because where I lived there was no one to teach about the future. By the time I turned 16 I realized that my goal was to be someone who could support his parents and I knew that there was a possibility for us to immigrate to Canada. I knew that I had a chance to go to school so I said to myself when we move to Canada I will be successful in school and this was why I expected to reach my goal. Moving to Canada has given me a new way of achieving my goal of helping my family and I am so happy to have an opportunity to go to school. The last four years my thoughts were completely different after moving to Canada and my dreams have also changed. Now I am in my last year of high school. My plan is to attend college to become a dental hygienist.
