The Host Program helps adult newcomers and their children adjust
to new life in Canada.
During the first months in a new country, Newcomers sometimes
feel isolated and lonely. Our Host Program
Co-ordinator can help you by introducing you to a
Volunteer - someone who lives in Thunder Bay and
can help you with the tress of adjusting to a new community.
Host Volunteers assist Newcomers in such areas as:
- banking and grocery shopping
- practising English
- learning about Canadian customs and practices
- using local transportation, the telephone, and other
utilities
- operating household appliances
- friendship and emotional support
- educational and employment concerns
Your new Canadian Friend will not provide living accomodations
or money, but will be able you in many ways that can make your
first months in Canada much easier.
Join the Host Program
Newcomers
Newcomers will need to fill out a HOST Program Newcomer
Registration form and bring in the Record of
Landing or Permanent Resident Card for all family members. The Host
Program Co-ordinator will give you information about the
program.
The Host Program Co-ordinator will then introduce you to a
Volunteer who would be compatible with you and/or your family.
You and your Volunteer will then begin meeting together. A
newcomer can expect to meet with their Volunteer as outlined in the
HOST Program Participant
Understanding form.
Both the HOST Program Newcomer
Registration and HOST Program Participant
Understanding forms have to be submitted to Thunder
Bay Multicultural Association
Volunteers
The Host Program does not involve a financial commitment.
Volunteers share time and friendship with immigrants during the
critical first months. Volunteers have to fill out the HOST Program Volunteer
Registration form and bring it to Thunder Bay
Multicultural Association.
