Any number of players, aged 5 and up usually played outdoors
Hoop-rolling was recommended for good health by the famous Greek
physician Hippocrates in 300 B.C, but the game can be traced back
to 66 B.C, It is an international game, played in Europe, Asia,
Africa and by Indians in North America. In Europe and Asia hoops
were made of wood or metal, and a stick was used to keep the hoops
rolling. In Africa and North America the natives practiced their
skill in throwing spears or darts through rolling hoops. The well
known hula-hoop craze in the last 1950s and 60s probably originated
from the rolling of hoops.
Many different games may be played with hoops, but the basic
skill with the hoop should first be developed. Hoops of any size
may be used, often being 70-80 cm tall. A stick with a bent nail in
one end must be used to prod the hoop along. Beginners should
practice rolling their hoops on a flat, slightly declining surface,
like a secret of the successful hoop-roller.
When players develop some skill with hoops, races may be held,
first on a straight course, then on a more progressively twisting
course. An interesting way to play with larger hoops is for players
to set hoops rolling and then jump through them.
