Peter and Rensje Aalbers both came from farming families in their native Holland. Peter attended trade school, but decided early on in life that he wished to own his own farm. As land and start-up capital were nearly impossible to obtain in Europe, the Aalbers came to Canada. They first investigated farming opportunities in Southern Ontario, but soon came to the Thunder Bay area where they worked on a farm owned by another Dutch immigrant for two years. During this time, they made the acquaintance of a farmer who offered to sell them his farm.

Since purchasing their farm they have doubled its size in terms of cattle and added to the buildings. The Aalbers work long hours every day in order to maintain their farm and continue its growth.

Maintaining their language and culture is very important to the Aalbers. They have two children, both of whom speak Dutch. Rensje in particular feels it is important for the children to be able to communicate with their grandparents and extended family in Holland.
