Newcomer Settlement Program
Report
For the Period April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2005
The Newcomer Settlement Program is a partnership program with
DOORS.
TBMA was approached by the Ministry of Citizenship in 2004 to
assist with delivery of the NSP program in Thunder Bay. In order
to apply for NSP funding, D.O.O.R.S. Refugee Centre was asked to
partner with another agency. Partnering with Thunder Bay
Multicultural Association seemed a natural choice as many of their
clients also access services from TBMA. The application for
funding was developed by TBMA with DOORS filling the role of
service provision partner.
Funding was received for a settlement worker and an employment
support person for a trial period of three months from January 1 to
March 31, 2005. During that time, we established an office at TBMA
for the partnership initiative. Outreach was done through radio,
television, newspaper articles, and by phoning the clients
previously served by D.O.O.R.S. The agency continued to assist
refugees and immigrants with immigration issues, housing, health
issues, family issues, education, and job search and other
employment matters. Clients were also referred to settlement
services provided by TBMA, as required.
The trial period proved quite successful for both agencies.
Application was made for further funding in March, 2005. Funding
was approved for a part-time settlement worker for the period from
April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006.
