My Canadian Experience By Yige Tong Moving to a new country is always a challenge, especially for teenagers. Moving away from family and friends is not always easy, and how do you know if you are going to make new friends in a place you’ve never been to? Well, here is my experience on coming to Canada and I hope this will help build your experience too. I first came to Canada in March 2005 from China. At that time, I could not speak English, and I had troubles at school because of communication difficulties. However, I was very quick at learning the language, thanks to my school teachers and friends. I also had lots of fun at school, and soon I made more friends. You meet new people not just at school, but in your neighbourhood as well. I met some very nice people such as my neighbours and people from different community groups. As you talk to them, you may find that many of them will have had the same experience as you do right now. If they do, be sure to ask advice and suggestions from them, as they will become very useful in your life ahead. One of the best things about Canada is the festivals. We have Canada Day and Christmas parades every summer and winter, and other multicultural events and festivals held by multicultural associations and other local organizations. It is always fun to participate, especially if the festival is about your particular ethnic background. It’s a great way to blend into your culture and to meet new friends! For me, coming to Canada was definitely the best thing in my life, and hopefully it will be yours too. I hope you have a great experience in Canada!!
